Built lawn by lawn, referral by referral.
Seven years ago this business was 32 customers, handed off by a landscaper who didn't want the residential work anymore. Here's how it grew into a soil-science-driven turf program serving Central Massachusetts.
In 2019, the landscaper David Patterson worked for handed him 32 residential customers — the owner no longer wanted to service that side of the business. David took them on himself.
Seven years later, that list has grown to more than 450 customers, almost entirely by word of mouth. No big ad budget, no sales team — just lawns that performed well enough that neighbors started asking who was taking care of them.
Along the way, David worked for his share of what he'll candidly call "less than desirable owners" in the industry — companies more interested in a quick sale than a healthy lawn. That experience is a big part of why The Turf Manager operates the way it does today: soil testing before spraying anything, real mineral fertilizer instead of filler, and a customer who can always reach the person actually doing the work.
How we got here
32 customers, one opportunity
A local landscaper exits the residential market and hands David Patterson his first 32 customers. The Turf Manager begins.
Built on results, not marketing
No ad spend to speak of — growth comes almost entirely from customers telling neighbors and friends about their lawns.
Soil testing becomes standard
Every customer is soil tested through UMASS Amherst on a 3-year cycle, with an all-mineral fertilizer program built around real results.
450+ lawns across Central Massachusetts
From Holland to Dudley, Westminster to Cambridge, and Haverhill to Franklin — and still growing, one referral at a time.
The principles behind the program
Test before you treat
We don't guess at what a lawn needs. Every property is soil tested so the program is built on real data, not a generic bag off the shelf.
Nutrients over quick color
All-mineral fertilizer, never filler-heavy blends — built for a lawn that keeps improving, not just one that greens up for a week.
Answer to the customer, not a sales quota
David built this business after working for owners who put sales ahead of results. Every customer here can still reach the person doing the work.
